The New Improved StarkvilleEATS - 0 Calories, 100% Caffeinated
StarkvilleEATS News

I feel like a kid wearing a brand new pair of blinding-white sneakers on the first day of school as I present to you the New and Improved StarkvilleEATS.com. I hope you enjoy the site, and I hope I don't get beat up at recess. Maybe by then my sneakers will be broken in and I will be picked first for kickball. Until then, let me show you around some of the new features.

The biggest change is the new Events List. Imagine if there were one single place to look for everything going on in Starkville instead of hunting through a half dozen outdated websites and newspapers, only to find out all the cool things you already missed out on? Well, we did more than just imagine it, and it turns out there is a heck of a lot going on in this town.

Now, of course everything is not on the list, at least not yet. Registered members of StarkvilleEATS are welcome to post not-for-profit and community events (subject to approval) and if you own a business with events or live entertainment, we can set you up with your own "Venue Listing" and even add your events to your restaurant listing. This is not the first website to try to host a citywide calendar, but I believe it will be the easiest to use and maintain.

Twitter: love it, or hate that you still don't quite get what it is or why you need it. I'm not here to tell you whether to tweet or not. But if you are the sort that enjoys a good tweet every now and then, well at StarkvilleEATS you are always just one click away from sharing events and articles with the twit-o-sphere other people who use Twitter (Sorry, I can't deal with some of this Twitter lingo.)

Well, that just scratches the surface, but I am eager to hear what you think. You know we love honest, constructive reviews here, so give it to me straight. Why not take a look around, post some new reviews, read a few articles, then try out the comments feature right down there at the bottom of this article.

Fix Google Maps in Starkville

Wouldn't it be cool if you could click on the map link on a StarkvilleEATS listing, and get directions directly to the restaurant of your choice? (All right, I know you know where everything is in this town, but new people move here all the time and they don't know what you mean when you say, "It's right next to the OLD Wal-Mart.")

Google Map of Starkville

Have you ever tried to locate a Starkville address with Google Maps, or any online map service for that matter? If you get a result, there is a good chance the pin will drop on the wrong end of the street, or possibly the wrong end of town. Even my GPS gets confused. Not surprising when you realize that Hwy 82, MLK Jr Dr, and Old Hwy 182 are all the same thing, and once they start building stuff out on the bypass (New 182) I don't know what we're going to do.

You could send your complaints to Google, but the truth is, they get map data from other sources. You can figure out who by checking the copyright info at the bottom of every Google Map. Around here, the data is provided by Tele Atlas.

Companies such as Tele Atlas gather data from existing maps, satellite imagery, crews out driving around in vans, and, most importantly for us, user feedback. No one knows Starkville like we know Starkville, so Tele Atlas actually encourages users to report errors and changes to their Website. Here is the link:

"Report a change in 3 easy steps..." It really is that easy, and if you choose, you can submit an email address and they will notify you of updates.

I have reported a few errors. I encourage you to do the same, especially if you are a local business owner and would like folks to be able to find you! I don't know how long it will take to get an update, but surely if we make some noise we will see some results. Are you with me?
