Wouldn't it be cool if you could click on the map link on a StarkvilleEATS listing, and get directions directly to the restaurant of your choice? (All right, I know you know where everything is in this town, but new people move here all the time and they don't know what you mean when you say, "It's right next to the OLD Wal-Mart.")
Have you ever tried to locate a Starkville address with Google Maps, or any online map service for that matter? If you get a result, there is a good chance the pin will drop on the wrong end of the street, or possibly the wrong end of town. Even my GPS gets confused. Not surprising when you realize that Hwy 82, MLK Jr Dr, and Old Hwy 182 are all the same thing, and once they start building stuff out on the bypass (New 182) I don't know what we're going to do.
You could send your complaints to Google, but the truth is, they get map data from other sources. You can figure out who by checking the copyright info at the bottom of every Google Map. Around here, the data is provided by Tele Atlas.
Companies such as Tele Atlas gather data from existing maps, satellite imagery, crews out driving around in vans, and, most importantly for us, user feedback. No one knows Starkville like we know Starkville, so Tele Atlas actually encourages users to report errors and changes to their Website. Here is the link:
"Report a change in 3 easy steps..." It really is that easy, and if you choose, you can submit an email address and they will notify you of updates.
I have reported a few errors. I encourage you to do the same, especially if you are a local business owner and would like folks to be able to find you! I don't know how long it will take to get an update, but surely if we make some noise we will see some results. Are you with me?
